Whir is a macOS menu-bar app that estimates the API-equivalent usage value of your local AI coding activity (Claude Code and Codex). It is designed to be private by construction.
Whir reads only the local log files those tools already write on your Mac:
~/.claude/projects/** (Claude Code)~/.codex/sessions/** (Codex)Transcript lines may also contain prompts, generated code, and tool output. Whir parses matching JSON records in memory, but uses and caches only token counts, model names, timestamps, and project folder names to compute cost estimates. It does not display, store, or upload conversation content, and it never opens credential files such as ~/.codex/auth.json.
pricing.json) from GitHub — a plain file download carrying no personal or usage data (GitHub sees your IP address, as with any download). Turn it off in Settings and Whir works fully offline with its built-in prices. All processing happens entirely on your device. Results are stored only in a local cache on your own Mac (~/Library/Application Support/Whir).
Whir stores nothing off-device. To remove all of Whir's local data, delete the app and its ~/Library/Application Support/Whir folder.
Whir is open source — you can read exactly what it does at github.com/yongjip/whir.
